Neil McCance from Comber, Northern Ireland Clinching the Irish Mitsubishi Evolution Challenge is quite a remarkable story, Having competed in the UK Version of the series for a number of years including victory on the legendary Isle of Man Rally and countless podiums Neil turned his outlook back to home this year and intended on competing in the events he enjoyed and wanted to do.
However some unexpected news in February this year had made his performance and title all the more special , Diagnosed with a hospitalising illness and having two bouts of surgery on the road to recovery and faced with a lenghty absence from the sport it was surprise to most when he entered the Circuit of Ireland over the easter holidays less than a month after his last surgery, he went on to claim both victorys in the Double Header round.
The Excellent result kickstarted Neil’s competitve drive again and he soon found himself dragged into a title fight against former sparring partner John McLaughlin, A second place in Cavan and a retirement on the ALMC saw him still in contention but only just, missing the Ulster event had the potential to end his campaign but with results falling his way on the day, it was still all to play for at the final round another double header event in Wexford.
Podium finishes could have been enough in Wexford but that was leaving to much too much to chance , to take the title and seal his own fate no less than two victorys were needed, and that is exactly what Neil Delivered on the day to see him crowned 2009 Irish Mitsubishi Evoultion Challenge Champion.
Neil’s attention now turns to the Grp N Class in the Northern Ireland Rally Championship a category he previously won in 2005, Again after a late arrival in the Championship victorys on the mourne and bushwhacker have placed him in contention although championship glory is very much an outside chance. With the glens of antrim on the 7th November the only remaining event neil must win and rely on non finishes for championship rivals Donagh Kelly and Raymond Johnston.
