Designing parts specifically for CNC machining is a critical step in optimizing the manufacturing process, reducing costs, and ensuring the highest quality for your custom components. By understanding and applying key design principles, you can unlock the full potential of this technology for your projects.

One of the most fundamental rules is to avoid sharp internal corners. CNC cutting tools are cylindrical, making it impossible to create a perfect sharp corner. Instead, specify a corner radius. Using a standard end mill size for your radii simplifies tooling and speeds up production. Furthermore, consider the depth of any cavities or pockets. Deep pockets require long tools, which can deflect and vibrate, leading to inaccuracies and poor surface finishes. A good practice is to limit pocket depths to 45 times the tool diameter.

Wall thickness is another crucial consideration. Excessively thin walls are prone to vibration during machining and can be easily damaged. We recommend a minimum wall thickness of 1mm for metals and 1.5mm for plastics to ensure structural integrity. Similarly, when designing features like holes, adhere to standard drill bit sizes to avoid the need for expensive, custom tools. For threaded holes, ensure there is sufficient material around them.

To minimize setups and reduce costs, design parts that can be machined in as few orientations as possible. A part that can be fabricated in a single setup is far more efficient. Also, consider adding slight chamfers (beveled edges) instead of sharp corners on external edges. This not only improves safety and part handling but is also easier for the machine to produce.

Text on a part should be engraved rather than embossed, as this requires less material removal. For undercuts or features that are not directly accessible from above, consider if they are absolutely necessary, as they may require special tooling and additional operations.
